Spring is here, a time of renewal and honoring those who embody the joie de vivre that the season inspires.

We would like to dedicate this April issue to a good friend of mine and Laguna Writer, Don Skipworth, who passed on February 23, 2015. Skip was present for the very first Birdand Retreat and attended others. He was a huge supporter of what we do. You can find his picture twice in the slide show at the top of the journal. Look for the round, white-bearded gentleman who bears a remarkable resemblance to a hip Santa Claus.

A chef and writer, Skip hosted and cooked Asian food for a Laguna Writers Retreat in June 2011 at his home in Santa Barbara amid his bamboo forest. Skip said: “I tried to simply be the best human being I can be, to offer my assistance and support to those I love, and to care for others along the way. I look for the potential goodness in those I meet. I avoid or put space between myself and those whose values and priorities are offensive and harmful to others. I feel blessed with goodness that has been shown me by my friends and loved ones. I believe we have a responsibility for helping create our own happiness. I know the power of love and feel its presence in my life. I want my own life to be described as a ‘life well lived.’ ”

We also wish Chris DeLorenzo a very Happy Birthday. Chris is our fearless leader, the founder of Laguna Writers, our teacher and dear friend.  To the continuation of writing, community, good food, and the joys of the creative life!
